Using Light to Improve Moods

Using Light to Improve Moods Image Do you feel better during the summer? Do rainy days make you blue? If so, there is a good reason. Lack of light is said to trigger mood swings and cause lack of energy. In fact, light therapy, where patients sit in front of a special light-emitting lamp, often helps to treat seasonal affective disorder, as well as, some types of depression.

Even if you don’t suffer from one of these medical conditions, you can still benefit from the positive effects of light, such as, better moods and more energy. Here are five ways to incorporate more light into your daily routine.

  • Take a daily walk during one of your work breaks or carve some time from your lunch hour. Even if it is just for a few minutes, getting out will boost your spirits and help productivity.
  • Let your windows work for you. Every morning, open the blinds and curtains to let in as much light as possible.
  • If possible, spend your day near a window. Position your workstation to take advantage of the light, whether direct or indirect, streaming in.
  • Paint the rooms in your house with light or bright colors. This allows the light coming in to reflect more into the room.
  • If you feel lack of light is causing serious symptoms, talk with your doctor. He/she might recommend investing in a light therapy system to guarantee enough exposure during the winter months.
