In today’s world of emailing, texting and social networking, handwritten notes have become a welcome surprise to those who receive them. Although appreciated anytime, there are a few occasions when writing a quick note makes the timing even more special. If you have trouble getting the right words down on paper, follow these quick and simple tips on writing notes of gratitude, congratulations and condolences.

Thank You Notes
Sending a thank you note for a gift or act of kindness is an etiquette must. 

• Start by recognizing your relationship with the individual receiving the note.
• Be specific and enthusiastic about how the gift will be incorporated into your life.
• Avoid writing, “thank you” over and over, but tell why you appreciate the gift and giver.

Congratulations Notes
It’s easy to share excitement in a written note. Keep your words optimistic and let your personality shine through.

• Focus on the event whether it’s an engagement, graduation or retirement.
• Compliment the newlyweds or new parents.
• Avoid giving advice in your note, but offer plenty of encouragement and good luck.

Condolence Notes
Though difficult to write, a condolence note is appreciated when sent with sincerity and love.

• Be honest by simply writing, “thinking of you,” if you don’t know what else to say.
• Share a memory you have with the deceased to demonstrate a personal connection.
• Avoid using words such as dead and “they are in a better place.”
