How to Help a Friend through a Break Up

A wise person once told me, “I wouldn’t wish a broken heart on my worst enemy.”  I don’t think I’ve ever heard truer words.  We’ve all been there, whether it was a crush in elementary school or a bitter divorce.  The sleepless nights, the red-rimmed eyes, the chronic stomach aches, the incessant checking of email, voicemail and all mail – break ups can feel like death.  And watching a close friend get through one of life’s toughest obstacles is heart breaking in itself.

Most people think sympathy should only be dished out when it comes to loss of life, but the loss of a significant relationship can be just as devastating to a friend’s psyche.  Many times, we look the other way, because we don’t want our friends to feel embarrassed or ashamed – especially when she was the “dumpee” instead of the “dumper.”  However, there’s a few things we can do for a friend mending a broken heart that might just give her the relief she needs to throw away the box of chocolates, slap some make-up on and dance the night away – just like single girls should!

Unfortunately, it’s hard to find a Hallmark card that reads, “Sorry you got dumped!” but a funny or light-hearted greeting card celebrating your pal’s newfound singleness can help add levity to a sad situation.  Try one under the “Just saying hi” or “Everyday” section.  Cards with silly pictures on the front that are blank inside give you the perfect opportunity to write down in words how much your friend means to you and the lucky guy she will eventually snag.

It’s also perfectly okay to send your grieving girlfriend flowers – just make sure you stay away from the romantic variety such as red roses.  Tulips, gerbera daisies and sunflowers are all bright, happy choices that will surely add color to a friend’s darkest days.  Send them to her home, her office, or hand deliver the flowers to her bedside.  It’s a wonderful reminder that the power of friendship can heal the deepest wounds of the heart.
