Create Fall Magic with Bulbs

Fall Magic with BulbsNow that summer is over, take a moment to sit back and look at your garden.  Are there areas that you would like to see color next spring?  Whether you have acres of garden or limit your gardening to a balcony or terrace planter, you can create fall magic by planting bulbs.  But keep in mind that when it comes to planting bulbs, it’s always essential to develop a plan before getting to work. Ensuring that you choose the right location and plant the bulbs correctly are all you need to enjoy their blooms in the spring.

Bulbs, like all plants, always look best when grouped in masses.  These clusters will make a bold statement in any area of your garden or yard.  If you are designing a flowerbed, consider planting bulbs that vary in height and are grouped in contrasting colors.  Be sure to choose the perfect spot for your bulbs. Key things to keep in mind when you are choosing an area:

  • Find a spot that will not be shaded by trees or buildings.
  • Don’t plant bulbs too close to a house. The heat may damage a bulb.
  • Avoid small areas – bulbs multiply through the years and this will prevent you from moving them in a few years.
  • Most importantly, choose an area where you can enjoy the flowers.

It is suggested to plant bulbs right after the first frost, which is usually between late September and early October. Try planting bulbs that bloom at different intervals to guarantee color from the spring through the fall. It is important to plant the bulbs at the appropriate depth. Most garden centers have bulb planters that allow you to get the correct depth for a bulb. Be sure to follow the suggested depth on the packaging of the bulbs.

Here is a charming idea for children.  Sneak some bulbs into Grandma’s planter or by the mailbox, and make a card explaining their gift with a drawing of spring flowers.  Kids love seeing the fruits of their labor next spring.

Happy Fall!
